COMMUNION TOKENS USED IN ENGLAND, WALES, AND THE CHANNEL ISLANDS
By H. S. A. COPINGER
[SEE PLATES XXV-XXVI]
SACRAMENTAL Tokens of the Presbyterian churches in England have not been catalogued since Mr. E. F. Herdman described his own collection in 1901. Some of the tokens listed here are to be found in Dick's 'Scottish Communion Tokens Other Than Those of the Established Church'; and those who wish to do research on these tokens cannot afford to ignore lists published by Messrs. Spink & Son, although the tokens that concern us in this paper appear seldom. Many pieces listed here have not, so far as I can ascertain, ever been published before.
The Sacramental Token played a very real part in the life of Presbyterians in the past. This was because of the importance that was attached to the reverent reception of the Sacrament and the awareness that unworthy reception was far worse than totally abstaining from the sacred feast. The Diet of Examination was held during the week preceding the Lord's Day on which there was to be a Communion service. If the minister were satisfied that those presenting themselves were versed in the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, and that they did not lead scandalous lives, then the Elders would distribute the tokens, which remained the property of the Church. On the Communion Sunday there would be what was called the 'Fencing of the Tables', so that the token could be the more easily collected by the Elder as the communicant approached to take his place at the table. Single numbers stamped on the face of the tokens denote at which table the communicant was expected. Tables were seldom, if ever, used simultaneously, but Communion services might continue from early dawn until evening. In penal days, some years might pass before a Communion service could be held at a particular church, so that the vicissitudes of the time caused Presbyterians, who lived scattered over many counties, to forgather at one church where the Communion was being held. The shortage of Communion plate, caused by persecution, was also a factor at this difficult time.
Most of the tokens listed in this paper are, however, of the nineteenth century. The older tokens belong to Scotch congregations with splinter groups forming new congregations, which for many years remained independent. In addition to these the Scottish Secession movements spread into England. Tokens listed below will be found to belong to one of the following Churches:
The Scottish National Church (or Scotch Church).
Independent Presbyterian.
Reformed Presbyterian (or Cameronians). English Presbyterian Church.
Associate Secession Congregation.
Relief Church (formed to relieve the consciences of those who scrupled to take certain oaths).
General Associate Congregation. United Associate Congregation. United Presbyterian Church. Free Church.
Congregations which at some period in their history had been connected with the seven last-named bodies were, with only three exceptions, united in 1876 to become 'The Presbyterian Church of England '.
During the early part of the present [20th] century, tokens were gradually replaced by cards; and there is no church, to my knowledge, that uses a metal token in this country today.
For the preparation of this paper I am grateful to have received every facility from the Department of Coins and Medals in the British Museum. My interest in Sacramental Tokens was aroused by the encouragement of the late Keeper, Dr. John Walker. In the same department I wish to thank Mrs. J. S. Martin for help at various times and especially in running down the correct identification of the Swallow Street tokens of London and in showing that the Oxendon, London, token (no. 154) was probably that belonging to a chapel which once lay in the Haymarket. For illustrations I am indebted to Mr. K. A. Howes.
Then I must thank Mr. Lockie, without whose help no research into Communion Tokens would be possible. Grateful thanks are also due to Mr. Albert Baldwin for allowing me to look through a large collection. Mr. W. W. Woodside of Pittsburgh, Pa., who issued a few years ago an excellent little bibliography of literature on Sacramental Tokens, has assisted me with encouragement and advice. It was particularly helpful to be allowed access to the Presbyterian Church House in London, to which churches had sent their supply of tokens when the card-system was adopted. Thanks are also due to Mr. Kerr who, in co-operation with Mr. Lockie, has compiled invaluable catalogues of the Scottish tokens. I must thank Mr. Oddy of the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh for sending me a list of relevant pieces in that museum and also for supplying me with some photographs. I am grateful to Westminster College, Cambridge, for allowing me to examine and take note of various hitherto unpublished pieces in their collection.
Dr. Agnew of Northern Ireland has gone to much trouble to send me details of pieces in the Museum of the Presbyterian Society, Church House, Belfast, and also in the Royal Ulster Museum, although in neither place did he find any unpublished tokens belonging to Presbyterian churches in England. He also sent me some very interesting details about the Revd. Edward Irving.
There are three non-Presbyterian tokens which ought to be mentioned:
ALBURY, Surrey. The Apostles' Chapel. When The Revd. Edward Irving, who had been the Minister of Regent Square, London, was deposed from the Presbytery of Annan in March 1833, he joined the 'Catholic Apostolic Church' and gave such impetus to that movement that the members became known as 'Irvingites'. He died in 1834. Other churches of this movement do not appear to have used tokens. My only record is from Mr. Lockie, who has affirmed that it is a large round token, dated 1832.
EXETER, Devon. St. Mary Major's, called' Mary Moore' and' Mary the Moore' in corruption of St. Marie la More.
Obv. MARY MOORE-1657-EXON.
Rev. 'DRINK YE ALL OF THIS COMMUNION CUP'.
There is no trace of this token at the Museum of the Torquay Natural History Society, where it was once supposed to have been. It is to be hoped that it is still extant. It must have been used at the parish church during the Cromwellian period. It is odd that other tokens of this period have not survived. It would seem that the Puritans of the period did not use tokens extensively.
LONDON, Southwark. There is a surviving specimen at Southwark Cathedral, but it is so damaged that it is not possible to describe it. It is said to date back to the days of Cardinal Pole.
The abbreviation 'w.m.' stands for white metal. The long dash at base-level occurring between words shows where the break occurs on the token. See illustration no. 6 (no. 140), SCOTTISH NATIONAL CHURCH_CROWN COURT, where the first three words are at the top of the token and the last two words in the lower part.

280.
A Stock Piece: same as no. 229, but omitting the words CAPE CHURCH SMETHWICK.
This piece is of copper.
[i] I have seen three specimens of this piece and each differs slightly in size.
[ii] This token was published in Milne's Communion Tokens of the Presbyterian Churches in Ireland (1920), no. 285.
[iii] The legends on this token are within an oval frame: the first and last lines on the obverse and the last line on the reverse are curved.
[iv] Mr. Herdman in his catalogue tells us that a congregation was formed at Rothbury in 1804, which continued until 1812, when it was united to that of Thropton. It is uncertain what the letter P stands for in no. 253; possibly for' Presbyterian'. There has been no minister with that initial either at Rothbury or Thropton.
